That nothing like this is done in my opinion is most likely due to the fact that using a human is much cheaper and that the development effort going into the robot arm and eye would not add to the chess capability of the system. Also, I do not think that it is against FIDE rules for someone else to place your move on the board, although I have not checked. For, if this were against FIDE rules, then blind people and people with conditions that hinder them from physically moving a chess-piece would effectively be disqualified from participating in FIDE rated chess tournaments on the basis of their respective handicaps, and I do not believe that this is the case.
