Apple transfered only the applications and components of the OS that profit from
64bit to 64bit, and this was done over a year ago. This and Altivec is the
reason the GUI of the Mac OS currently is about 10 times faster on a G5 than on
a Intel Dual Core. Of course this will change when parts get optimized for the
new Intel processors.
Every company can provide special versions and libraries for G4, G5 or Intel
Dual Core with their applications. You can choose the platforms that you want to
optimize for in the compiler.
There's is no need to rewrite every crap to 64bit, because sometimes that can
even lead to performance loss. Please also read:
