Thanks for the clue. It was maybe enuf to get me over the learning hump. :) But
actually it doesn't work exactly that way, at least not with my CB/Fritz GUI
from Shredder 8...

If infinite mode is running, pressing spacebar ignores the book and plays the
best move from the analysis so far.

However, if the position is on the chessboard and "no mode" is adopted or
running, pressing spacebar either:
(a) plays the book move, if there is one, and in that case the engine is NOT
started thinking, or
(b) if there is no book move available, it starts the engine thinking

In the case of (b), I don't know for sure what mode it is thinking in. It
apparently isn't infinite mode because the little infinite icon on toolbar isn't
'depressed'. Actually I suspect it is in infinite mode, and the GUI just doesn't
know it. :)

That apparently solves the riddle, subject to more testing. Procedure (a) above
determines what move would be played from book, any book, not just Rybka's book
(presumably). I'll just have to keep an eye on the Book Option settings (f4)
because they didn't stick the first time.
