Here is an interesting endgame position with unbalanced material, from a recent game Arasan vs. Rajah on ICC: 8/6k1/4P3/1b1n1P2/6PK/8/p7/4R3 b - - Crafty 16.6 likes Kf6 here and gives it a draw score. However, when I forced it to search Ne3, it does this: 11-> 5.34 -2.33 1. ... Ne3 2. Kg5 Nc2 3. f6+ Kg8 4. Rh1 a1=Q 5. Rxa1 Nxa1 6. Kf4 Nc2 7. g5 12 9.77 ++ 1. ... Ne3!! 12 3:52 -1.89 1. ... Ne3 2. Kg5 Nc2 3. f6+ Kg8 4. Rh1 a1=Q 5. Rxa1 Nxa1 6. f7+ Kg7 7. Kf4 Kf8 8. g5 12-> 3:52 -1.89 1. ... Ne3 2. Kg5 Nc2 3. f6+ Kg8 4. Rh1 a1=Q 5. Rxa1 Nxa1 6. f7+ Kg7 7. Kf4 Kf8 8. g5 13 4:46 -1.54 1. ... Ne3 2. Ra1 Bc4 3. e7 Kf7 4. f6 Nc2 5. Rxa2 Bxa2 6. g5 Ne3 7. g6+ Ke8 8. Kg3 Bf7 13-> 4:46 -1.54 1. ... Ne3 2. Ra1 Bc4 3. e7 Kf7 4. f6 Nc2 5. Rxa2 Bxa2 6. g5 Ne3 7. g6+ Ke8 8. Kg3 Bf7 14 5:38 -1.54 1. ... Ne3 2. Ra1 Bc4 3. e7 Kf7 4. f6 Nc2 5. Rxa2 Bxa2 6. g5 Ke8 7. g6 Ne3 8. Kg3 Bf7 14-> 5:38 -1.54 1. ... Ne3 2. Ra1 Bc4 3. e7 Kf7 4. f6 Nc2 5. Rxa2 Bxa2 6. g5 Ke8 7. g6 Ne3 8. Kg3 Bf7 Note the really long time to get through ply 12! It seems like it settles on a score of -1.5 but it looks steady so maybe Black can draw this way, too. I have recently put some fixes into Arasan for pawn race scoring - now it prefers Ne3 for a long time but eventually switches to Kf6. However, it still gives a + score for Black. I would be interested to know what other programs think of this position. --Jon --Jon
