The "plug and play" metaphor is really much more along the lines of "plug and pray." Despite this, Windows will be the most popular desktop at least for a decade. Though it seems simple to install a board for you or me (or your wife) that is because we are not intimidated by such things. But an astonishing number of people are petrified to open the case, and are even a bit intimidated by simple directions. About three clicks with "Yes" or "No" is about the most that they want to handle, even when installing software. This is not to say that people need to be computer types to enjoy programs. But I am sure that you have found it astonishing that some people are completely unable to install Crafty, despite the clear and simple directions. Hardware devices do (indeed) sell. External Zip drives, Video Toaster devices, etc. are obvious examples. But having to install hardware of any kind will reduce your market to some degree.
