Subject: Crash when trying to bench Crafty

Author: Dave Gomboc

I've tried three executables under NT (4.0 SP5, dual PII-300, 128MB ram)... all
are crashing when I type "bench", but seem to work fine for normal use! I'm
sure this works for most people, so something must be wrong with my setup.

Here's the crafty.rc:

mt=2
display changes
display extstats
display hashstats
display movenum
display moves
display stats
display time
display variation
hash 48M
hashp 4M

Here's what wcrafty-16.8-smp.exe says on startup:

EPD Kit revision date: 1996.04.21
unable to open book file [./book.bin] for"write".
learning is disabled
unable to open book file [./books.bin].
max threads set to 2
display PV each time it changes.
display extended statistics at end of each search.
              clearing hash tables
display move numbers in variations.
display ply-1 moves as they are searched.
display statistics at end of each search.
display time for moves played in game.
display PV at end of each iteration.
hash table memory = 48M bytes.
pawn hash table memory = 4M bytes.

Crafty v16.8 (2 cpus)

White(1):

When I type "bench" (sans quotes), I get a nice popup dialog:

    wcrafty-16.8-smp.exe - Application Error

The instruction at "0x0045ae59" referenced memory at "0x0000000c". The
    memory could not be "read".

Click on OK to terminate the application
Click on CANCEL to debug the application

                               [OK][Cancel]

Anyone out there who has seen this problem and knows how to fix it?

Dave
