The Swiss format is equally unfair for all participants. ;-) The Swiss format is good at finding out two things: 0. What is the best entry in the contest 1. What is the worst entry in the contest All intermediate placings are in greater doubt. Quite frankly, with the number of games played, even the lowest ranked program might conceivably be the best. I think you must admit that when you win, you had a good turn of probability. A good example, I think, is one of the Rebel losses. Consider the Rebel/Nimzo game, and in particular, this segment... No way out that I see. Here is the turning point of the game: 1N6/2p2kp1/p4b2/8/1PP1pp2/P6P/5PK1/8 b - - acd 16; acn 167512265; acs 1000; ce -101; pv f3+ Kf1 Ke6 Nxa6 Be5 b5 Kd6 c5+ Kd5 a4 Bc3 Nxc7+ Kxc5 Ne6+ Kb4 Ng5 Kxa4 Nxe4 Bd4; 1N6/2p2kp1/p7/8/1PP1pp2/P6P/1b3PK1/8 w - - acd 16; acn 163593570; acs 1000; ce 129; pv Nxa6 Bxa3 b5 f3+ Kf1 Bd6 c5 Bh2 b6 cxb6 cxb6 Ke6 b7 Kd5 Ke1 Kd4 b8=Q Bxb8 Nxb8; It is interesting that for black, there is really no good alternative and also that the danger does not show up until ply 14. Then, for white, it is "all good" after that. I suspect any other program given the above position for black cannot find a solution either. Hence, I think this is the !! move (previous to the two above): 8/2p2kp1/p1N2b2/8/1PP1pp2/P6P/5PK1/8 w - - white chooses Nb8!!. I am wondering if it was stumbled onto, or if it really was forseen.
