Crafty, for example may be more efficient (more NPS) on a 64 bit machine than a 32 bit machine since Crafty is designed to be efficient using 64 bit archicture (bitmaps come to mind for Crafty). Bob would know more about this than I do. The wider bandwidth and larger memory capacity of 64 bit archictures may help some programs (Crafty for example). An OS that takes advantage of 64 bit architecture will help a program run efficiently in this environment. So yes, you would need to use a 64 bit OS.
