Hi, everyone: Overnight, I reviewed the manual and re-examined my own computer,
and here are my conclusions. I am convinced that the best way to set your hash
size for Fritz 5.x is:

1. (as described in the manual, section 5.3, subsection "How to configure the
hash table") Go to Levels / Engine Research / System Configuration. Look at
the line "Minimum hash proposal". To the RIGHT there will be a range (for
example, 40960 kB - 49152 kB). You should choose a hash size anywhere in the
range shown.

2. (manual section 5.2) Go to Levels / Engines / Load Engine. Look at the
line "Hash table size (kB)". To the RIGHT you will see an adjustable setting
for your hash table size; use the up and down buttons on the screen to set your
hash size.

3. (manual section 5.3, subsection "Preparing for the game") Read this section
carefully.

Using this method, I can get a hash size about 3/4 of my RAM, with no hard drive
problems. I can get about 48 meg hash on my 64 meg system. I have no access
problems. I follow the instructions in "Preparing for the game" when I load the
engine, and after that my hard drive is quiet. My hash tables fill after a
little over one minute, which seems about right on my Pentium II 350 MHz.

Please let me know if there is a better method.

Cheers,
Mark
