9.3.99 To Masciulli Gianluigi: I've cruised the Internet looking for free- and shareware chess programs and don't remember ever seeing the name Golem (named for the character in "The Hobbit"?). However, I copied a list from one site (find below) and have included all of the links and sites that I have found to this point. Also, I have had success with using the search engine Metacrawler (http://www.metacrawler.com) and simple searches such as "free chess downloads" and "chess downloads". I hope this is of some help because I have not found a comprehensive list as to this point (perhaps other members know of a "one-site-shopping" alternative). Here's a short list from Chess Programming from the Ground Up -- http://home.fda.net/%7Ewzrdking/chessprg.htm -- ExChess - Dan Homan's experimental chess program. -- KnightCap - A learning chess program by Andrew Tridgell. -- Tjes - A cheapware chess program by Marcel Nijman. Crafty Successor to the famous Cray Blitz. Written by Bob Hyatt. Stobor Tom Kerrigan's strong amateur program. Also on this page is Tom's Simple Chess Program. -- The Crazy Bishop - A freeware chess program by Remi Coulom. -- Dark Thought - A world class program by Markus Gille and Ernst A. Heinz. -- Nero - A chess program by Jari Huikari. -- Y-Chess - A chess program by Roman Antonczyk. -- Chenard - Don Cross's creation. -- Arasan by Jon Dart. -- SSEChess by Sam Slutzky. -- Hossa by Steffen Jakob. -- Inmichess by Werner Inmann. -- Green Light Chess by Tim Foden. -- KC Chess by Kevin Phillips and Craig Bruce. This program was K & C's undergraduate project. I don't think they are actively working on it. -- GromitChess by Frank Schneider. -- Rival - A program by Chris Moreton. Nice graphics! -- Pierre - The up and coming program by Alex Boby. Watch out! -- ZChess by Frank Zibi. -- Phalanx - FTP site for the very strong program by Dusan Dobes. -- ZZZZZZ - A windows based program with Delphi 4.0 Source Code, by Gijsbert Wiesenekker. Here are some other sites I have stumbled upon: ZDNet -- Go to games and do a search for chess or chess downloads. They have a good amount of programs (and screensavers, chess variants, etc.). http://www5.zdnet.com Chess City -- A good links page. http://www.chesscity.com Beh Software's SHARWARE CHESS LINKS -- Like it says, good list of chess links. http://www.behsoftware.com Electric Games -- Has links page which I haven't investigated very far. Sorry, found this recently and just haven't had time to look. http://electricgames.com/gamelink.html Chess Web's Free Share -- Over 30 downloads and a links page. http://webhome.globalserve.net/chess/default.htm I hope that this helps. I know it's not a simple list but I've found that, despite the Internet's obvious convenience, there aren't many comprehensive lists of anything. Kelly Patterson
