See the SSDF for engine/engine match results.  Some question the integrity of
these games.  I do not.

There is another organization that throws in human matches (can't remember the
URL and am too lazy to look for it).  If you are really curious about strength,
I would hunt for it.  It's in England somewhere, IIRC.

Any of the top ten programs will kick the rear of 99.999% of all chess players.

Crafty is probably the strongest freeware program.  On standard hardware, it is
probably not quite as strong as the top commercial programs, but it's not far
off.  With multiple CPU's it may be stronger than any of them (but maybe not too
-- who knows?)

Strength alone will probably not be enough to determine your enjoyment.  Each
chess program has nice things about it besides strength.  Database features,
analysis features, etc.  I'd read some reviews if I were thinking of buying
another chess program and was not sure which one to pick.
