After reading Josh's message I realized I was so rude to come in here and start posting without properly introducing myself. I am sorry about that. Better late than never, so here we go: I'm 29 yrs old, from Germany. Currently Math grad student at U of Del. I've been reading a lot about computer chess in the last 10+ years, but never wrote anything substantial, except for a simple mate detector on an old Atari ST. Recently I started to write some procedures. The goal is not a top class playing engine (which I wouldn't be able to write anyway), but a library (codename: Alice) to allow me experimenting with various algorithms and data structures. With this goal in mind, the focus is on reusable, understandable software. It will be a C++ class library (similar to the Crazy Bishop), and I *will* use virtual functions. I did some stuff, e.g., rotated bitboards, but then I had to move from little endian to big endian, and I realized the code was not as portable as I thought. :( As a chess player, I'm rather weak (SvenR on fics), so my engines should at least be able to beat me. ;-) Let me add that I really like this forum and its friendly atmosphere.
