In my test it's as fast (if not faster) than VC++, its much easier to learn and read, which generally leads to faster development cycles. In addition it also supports 64 bit integers that can make life simpler for chess programming FWIW I have written in Delphi 5 a reasonably complex (ie not just a fast searcher) chess program that managed on a P2 450 MHz 250 kn/s in the middle game and 500 kn/s in the endgame. This included incremental attack and shaddow attack updating but (very) simple evaluation. Hope that you'd aggree that think this is as least as good as C++. Delphi's one drwaback has always been that it is only available on Win 95/98/NT - this will also change as Delphi is being ported to Linux for release in 2000. Steve Maughan
