The ones I usually point to are Fritz (notoriously root processing) and Nimzo. I am sure there are others (IE Junior seems to be a 'flavor' of this approach although maybe the processing isn't at the root, but then again it isn't at the tips either.) I've found that it doesn't really matter what _others_ do. It only matters what _I_ am doing. Because that is the only program that I worry about. :)
