That's an important part of tuning the program (and not only the opening book), to make it avoid types of positions in which it is inclined (by virtue of its basic algorithms) to make stupid moves. Unless you reproduced all the moves up to the "bad" one, it could still be a poorly tuned (at least for the comp-comp play) engine.
