I remember when Computer Chess Reports was published once a year, and Enrique Irazoqui was its editor. The usefulness and quality of that publication does not have a contemporary counterpart. I would venture to say that myself and others would be willing to fork over the cost of a new chess program if we could have access to a publication of that quality today. So many of the posters on CCC seem to be unaware of the following facts: 1] the raw strength of the program is no loger an issue for 99.99% of us. 2] what maters to the vast majority of us is: a] the style and variety of play. b] the ability of the program to be handicaped to yield a challeging and interesting opponent without throwing away material or making silly moves. c] the ability of the program to analize our games in a manor that allow us to find our mistakes and thus increase our understanding of chess. The main problem I find in reading CCC postings is the great diversity of opinions regarding the "truth," and there is no easy or reliable way to sort through this maze of information. We need one objective, reliable reviewer to focus on the above issues. If I can find one, just tell me where to send the money!
