While Anand can't remember every single game played I think you are absolutely right. The opening book is as much a part of the chess program as anything else. God did not come down from heaven one day and decree that computers should only use alpha-beta search algorithms. Imagine the following scenario: all chess programs are using minimax. Somebody discovers alpha-beta. Can you see the Grandmaster community in an uproar because computers don't have to search every possible variation anymore? I can. =) -Tom
