Go up one level in this thread
IMHO CS-Tal is very good indeed in this respect. I have far more fun playing CS-Tal than I do any of my other chess computers. The others may be stronger, but they cannot play a human like game to save their lives! I can set CS-Tal to my own Elo rating level, and have a really good game against it! It doesn't outdo me in tactics - it's play looks a lot like a human opponent. Furthermore, I cannot get any of my other chess computers to play at my level. Their problems include: * They jump too quickly from "too easy" to "too difficult" by moving up just one level * They are too strong in the middle game, but too weak in the endgame What makes CS-Tal special is that it is very rich in knowledge, and is prepared to play "speculatively". By comparison, with other strong programs, the emphasis is on hitting as many search nodes as possible. In conclusion, CS-Tal plays the right way to practise against for humans, and to get a great game of chess for sheer pleasure. -g
