It is now recognized that it was intended to be harmless hyperbole. However, it
is good to remember that some people take drug issues very seriously. My cousin
(who was also one of my best friends) and I were going to be business partners
when we grew up [typical teen-age pact]. He shot himself through the head over
drugs. So sometimes (for instance with me) drug abuse has a very bad and
negative emotional connotation. So it is best not to offend needlessly.

On the other hand -- we should all do our best not to *take* offense needlessly.
A wise man once said, "The taking of offense is what rests in the bosom of the
stupid ones."

So if we fly off the handle at every little slight -- whether real or imagined
-- what does that say about us?
;-)
