I think this is a general "internal PC speaker" issue.
Every program which issues a beep has a different volume depending on the
machine it runs on, e.g. on my systems:

MChess P6-233 (Waibel)      rather loud
Rebel 10 P6-233 (Waibel)    audible
MChess PIII-550 (Gateway)   audible
Rebel 10 PIII-550 (Gateway) barely audible

The K6-233 behaves just like the P6-233, but this does not necessarily mean it's
a matter of CPU speed.
