Ricardo, Lets assume that we are only talking about character data so the answer to your question is it really doesnt matter but if you still want to know then yes there may be zero's leading. Lets not look at this from a numerical view point but as a string viewpoint for both the string and substring. I hope this answers your question. Thanks Les
