If possible, how can one (a >non-computer expert) delete stuff safely from its operation without, deleting >it entirely, to speed it up for windows chess software? Thanks. Those options are completely customiseable by standard user actions. I have switched most of them off (or even better, chosen not to install them, like desktop themes and such). Most important for a faster handling in Win98 is to have much RAM, which also effects your chess software because of bigger hash tables which are possible then. There have been recommendations to limit the drive cache (vcache) by a *system.ini* file setting, of which I had no bad experience so far. It's said that otherwise, Win98 would take too much of the free memory for vcache. The limitations of this could decrease overall system performance (esp. for many drive accesses), but leaves more RAM available for hash tables. [vcache] MinFileCache=2048 MaxFileCache=3072 (not to be confused with the virtual memory swapfile) Regards, M.Scheidl
