Bauer = "Farmer" = pawn Springer = "Jumper" = knight Laeufer = "Runner" = bishop Turm = "Tower" = rook Dame = "Lady" = queen Koenig = "King" = king IMO, the German terms make more sense. =) It would be interesting to find positions where the top programs all find the correct move immediately, but material-only evaluation does not find it ever. Unfortunately, I don't know an easy way to determine that top programs find a particular move immediately. -Tom
