A couple of days ago I started running Chess Tiger 12.0e on FICS and ICC
(Lambkin / MagusX). I played more games on FICS and managed very easily to have
Tiger share spot #2 in blitz. Of course, it will be almost impossible to place
that high on ICC as the HW used on ICC is really very impressive and I am using
a mere PII-400. I've been impressed by the quality of Tiger's play to that
extent that I feel the need to say this out loud. Tiger is absolutely the best
program that I have operated on FICS and ICC, and I have tried many of them. It
(he?) has this uncanny positional "feeling" and one may easily be misled into
thinking that it is a strong GM playing, not merely a piece of software. Even
though it (he?) was not intended to be a top blitzer it is very, very strong at
blitz too.
To show you what I meant by "positional feeling", please go through this game in
which Tiger faced a very strong Crafty on a fast PIII computer. Tiger played for
the weak white squares just as it should be played in the Marshall, and I loved
watching it goad Crafty into a tactical disaster:
