I found that I could just paste an epd directly into Crafty, see the upper left
hand corner of Crafty's Dos box & edit & paste.  This take Winboard out of that
process for me.  Crafty just loads the position right in, I looked for a command
to do this, but it was not needed.  Here's what Crafty had to say:
