Tinker in its present form is about 18 months old. I started looking at computer chess again after the DB/GK rematch in NYC in May 1997. My interests in computer chess had been dormant for about 20 years (I had started in high school in 1971 and thru college had a VERY simple program that would play 2-4 ply). From mid'97 thru mid'99 I first ported my old program from FORTRAN to C, had to learn some rudimentary MSVS C, and started researching on the web. WOW--had things changed in 20 years. Gnuchess led to Crafty and Winboard and about a dozen other engines. I spent many evenings reading code. I experimented with various move generation schemes and picked non-rotated bitboards, not realizing until later than move generation was only about 20% of the picture. Tinker has been on ICC since January this year and doing better than I had expected (more so against humans). All back ICCA issues have just arrived so I expect to be busy for quite some time...
