rebuilding the book does lose book learning.  however, hopefully you still
have your old book.lrn file (which crafty never destroys). Just rename that
to something like learn.dat, then start crafty and enter "import learn.dat"
to restore everything.

(it is amazing what you will find in the documentation file crafty.doc...  :)
