The Winboard programs are too difficult for 90% of the people in the world to install. Sounds like a wild exaggeration, but I will bet it is pretty accurate. Commercial programs are not just very strong players, but they have many additional functions as well. Database functions spring to mind. The biggest reasons (I think) are: 1. Ease of installation 2. Ease of use 3. System documentation 4. System features 5. Technical support Commercial programs are dirt cheap. The most expensive playing programs are around $100. You can get Chessmaster for absurdly low cost. It's like $20 or $30. A serious player would certainly be willing to part with such a pittance to improve his/her play. All that having been said, when I play it is usually against crafty with winboard!
