Robert, I can understand one element of the clone idea that you have ignored. If I have a chess program and I think that certain settings (or certain eval modifications on a program with source) will make it play stronger (or more human GM-like or more human 1700-like or whatever), then a good place to test my settings would be at a chess server (e.g. ICC). So, I could see why some people clone and play those clones. To discover. To see if someone else can handle the grunt work and they can improve upon it and add more "artistic value" (whatever that means) to the program. Personally, that would not interest me, but I can see where it may interest other people. KarinsDad :) PS. Granted, I think some of the people clone in order to "one up" others in the rating wars as well. To each their own. PSS. And maybe some of them dislike the programmers and want to burn up cycles at the chess servers. And maybe some of them are commercial programmers who want to not only check out the competition, but to burn cycles at the chess servers (sorry, I couldn't resist being paranoid).
