I was in a similar situation with Tinker about 6 months ago. I had studied source for about a dozen programs and wanted to use some pieces from several of them. My "solution" was to send an email to the primary author (in this case Bob Hyatt) with some code and I explained my intentions. Bob was good enough to email back that he felf the changes were significant enough that Tinker should not be considered even close to a "Crafty clone". Tinker today uses the basic shell of TSCP and non-rotated bitboards similar to Crafty. There is also some modified code from other programs in "utility" areas since my C skills are still weak (for example, parsing a FEN string). Of course, I have also added many enhancements, including null moves, killers, IID, PVS, extensions, hash tables, a whole new eval function and Winboard support with moderatly complex time management. I am still working on learning and a book, pawn hashing, and the endless list... My finger notes (and source comments) also acknowlege special thanks to Bob Hyatt, Tom Kerrigan and Tim Mann and a couple of others, but I consider Tinker mine.
