I think that's a question of sponsorship isn't it? I can watch live GM games
all day long at ICC if I want to, but they won't usually be standard time
controls and there probably won't be strong players kibitzing. But ICC can
do this and I'm sure they will if CK becomes a threat. Please don't get me
wrong. I don't care if ICC or CK does this (I'd prefer both). I just feel that
CK have unnecessarily annoyed two of the top players in the world, who may not
be so willing to participate in this sort of event in future. That is what
bothers me, not whether one technical approach is better than another.

Are you able to use the CoffeeHouse Java program at chessclub.com? I use
this sometimes and it seems quite nice. I'm sure it won't be as professional
as something done by CK, but ICC does work pretty well.
