They hide nothing. To the contrary programs without them are simply missing something valuable. They add knowledge which the programs use very effectively and increase performance. They add accuracy to endgame analysis. They add rating points to all programs that use them. My latest test indicates approximately 35-40 point increase of Hiarcs 7.32 vs Hiarcs 7.32 without tablebases. This test was done at Blitz time controls vs Chess Tiger and consisted of 400 games (200 with and 200 without tablebases). I believe they are now a necessary part of any modern chess program.
