Hello Jouni,
In my opinion the tablebases are now an integrated part of the endgame abilities
of the engines. They hide nothing. To the contrary programs without them are
simply missing something valuable. They add knowledge which the programs use
very effectively and increase performance. They add accuracy to endgame
analysis. They add rating points to all programs that use them. My latest test
indicates approximately 35-40 point increase of Hiarcs 7.32 vs Hiarcs 7.32
without tablebases. This test was done at Blitz time controls vs Chess Tiger
and consisted of 400 games (200 with and 200 without tablebases). I believe
they are now a necessary part of any modern chess program.
