I think it is mostly happening at short timecontrols and at home. Look at
important tournaments (WMCCC, IPCCC in Paderborn, ...). You will see that
the commercial programs do much better than the amateurs.

No easily maybe, but they could be. Most commercial programs started as
amateurs.
