There's a paper by Dennis M. Breuker (PhD thesis) called "Memory versus Search in Games" that has a chapter dedicated to the transposition tables. IMO it's a very interesting reading and helps a lot in understanding some TT issues, including how much memory should it be allocated and whether it's better to use extra memory to expand the table or to add more information to table entries.
