Use Winboard compatible programs. You can get the source code to about a dozen
of them, from club player to {quite possibly} GM strength.

The source to Winboard is available. There are also Java chess interface
systems that you could study.

If you do use source from another author, make sure that the usage is acceptable
and that the original author is credited.
If you choose a Winboard interface, even some of the top commercial programs can
be used.
