I know for Crafty, the PII/PIII is substantially faster than the equivalently clocked K62/K63/Athlon. A K62-450 is only something like 10% faster than a PII-300 (IIRC. It's probably a little more than that...) for Crafty. Many programs prefer the AMD chips, however. Rebel and CS-Tal I know prefer the AMD chips quite a bit over the Intel ones. For CS-Tal, at least, part of this is due to the large and fast L2 cache.
