Getting rid of the 50-move rule doesn't mean getting rid of insufficient
material rules (if they exist - if they don't, they should be added).  Also,
cases like KR vs. KR should be declared a draw.  But in cases like KNNKP, where
one side can win but will draw by 50-moves, it will help.
