Hi, We see once more with this event that we are facing a deep problem : we are NOT sure of the fairness of human-computer matches. 'We' represents everyone involved in chess : OTB players, correspondance players, computer chess addicts, and so on. In every competition, there are rules ; the trouble is that, humans and computer don't have the same means to play the game of chess. Computer : calculation power, huge and 'perfect' memory (RAM, hard disks, CD drivers, DVD...), no fear, no stress, never tired. OTB human player : good but tricky :o) memory, intuition, very good at using chess knowledge. Correspondance human player : the same as OTB plus books and database. Stephen HAM is experimenting for us in the correspondance zone, but I think we can say now, that the games are 'fair' : the time control is sufficient to eliminate stress and tireness, and the right to use databases and books compensate the fantastic memory of computers. I think that we have to find good and new rules for OTB play, because I'm convinced that computer have an unfair advantage over humans there. The rules of chess competition have been written with human in mind, so if we want to see computers compete with us, we must write new rules. And we'll have to do it again for martians.
