It is possible that the file name contains invisible characters (like #256) so
that when you type 'del the_file' it does not work whereas 'del
the_file'+ALT+256 (or any combination) it works. Generally speaking using weird
characters in a file name is a good way to get weir behaviour from OS.

Maybe this is worth a try.
