It does sound a little strange. The phenomenon mostly occurs between programs without learning. But if there's 19 book moves, then there isn't much room for improvisation. Crafty might be so well off after the book moves that the remaining moves are obvious. Learning is a funny thing though. Sometimes a program with learning abandons the variation with which it won and loses instead. The solution might be to change the book width of Crafty, hoping that it would choose something else besides 1.e4. Best wishes... Mogens
