I was rolling down the Washington Beltway back in the warm month of May 1980 playing a nice game of chess with my buddy Boris. Boris and I were opening with a nice Ruy Lopez and he was set to his highest level of about 1000 USCF. I slowly crushed him and it was a good day for him to die. I shut him off and put the pieces away and closed his walnut box. I forgot what he said when he lost.... It has been so long ago. When I got home my wife asked me if I was playing chess while driving. "Yes, dear, I was!" " You stupid bastard---don't you know that you could get in an accident that way??." was her aggravated response. I must admit that it was fun. I reassured her that I would play only when the car was not moving. This sounds like cellphone city doesn't it? Boris took many trips with me into the hills of Virginia and the Smoky Mountains and.... It was a sad day that I sold Boris to a fellow from North Carolina by the name of Bell. Mr. Bell was a true Southern gentleman who loved the "Dukes of Hazard". He treated Boris very well and Boris endured his poor play with respect. Alas, poor Boris finally fell apart and went to the computer chess heaven in the sky. I was on my way to bigger and faster opponents but Boris was my first pretty good chess-playing box. May he rest in pieces. Tim Frohlick
