I follow the computer chess developments since the days of Mephisto II (the
black box), although I had a Chess Champion MK I before, but this was more of a
toy than a chess computer.
One of the most impressive machines for me, was the Fidelity Chess Challenger
"Excel MachIIc", which was my first 16bit computer, and I think also the first
micro with hash tables. I enjoyed it much, to see it calculate into two digit
ply depths within seconds in some pawn endgames, finding study-like solutions
easily.
Soon I recognized - which was quite sad - that I couldn't tell the difference in
strength between an Avantgarde 6502 and a Mephisto risc from my own play (which
was about +400 elo). I think this was one major setback in my little imaginized
chess career...
