Pete, I try all what I can to made the configuration from chessprogram easy for new user which have interest on WinBoard engines. WinBoard is fantastic and the work from all programmers which made his programs compatible. But I see in the last months that user ask me in eMails (I get 20-40 eMails pro day) or in the fora to WinBoard and all answers to this questions stand a long time on my webpage. Not a reproach, but it is easy to play under Chess-Base with an Native engines with all full support from the GUI. It is good when people can play with WinBoard and engines for free and the programmers wrote very good readme files and Tim Mann made an excellent documentation but not all persons like WinBoard. When here 7 programmers give a support for Chess-Base and made here programs compatible to Chess-Base is this fantastic for all fans from these GUIs. And I mean that the GUIs are fantastic with here options ! Now Chess-Base made a CD with amateur programs for his GUIs. I think a good idea and many people which like the GUI have now more intersting programs. Furthermore is this action good for amateurchess. The programs become known for the future. It is clear in my eyes that people play tournaments which chess programs or like it to have many different programs. It is now again Chess-Base with a good idea for the market, we have enough other points who Chess-Base is other firms in good ideas in front. For me is this not new ! I think, when I put a program on my webpage as a free program is this good for all users. But this is not a reason to offer (for sale) a program ! When AnMon play with 2600 ELO why the programmer must gave here program for free when other programs got for programs with 2350 ELO 100 German DM (I will not say which programs). I made an amateur chess webpage and aim at that all people know the amateur programs. I am glad to see that I have success ! I think that the amateur programmer got in the last years not the appreciation which deserved for his work. Now I am happy that a big firm made an interesting CD with very very strong amateur programs. And ... In all the time Chess-Base offer Comet, Crafty, ExChess ! This is a important point. Uli Türke made 15 versions for Chess-Base or more and all the Crafty version (complement to Prof. Dr. Robert Hyatt to the very high rating and impression program). All the time has Chess-Base interest to make his engine concept interesting for the people and supported the work from amateur programmer. I can not see that an other firm make this in the last years. So many updates for the user from Chess Base GUIs and programs (not all updates are bug fixes)! It is good when WinBoard engines runs in comercial GUIs and I am happy to see that in Chess-Assistant the programs runs perfectly (last update SP1 for the version 5.0). All firms see that user have interest on this programs. 01) Chess-Base (the first firm) 02) Chessvision (the second) 03) Millennium Chess System 04) Chess Academy 05) Chess Assistant 06) Bookup 07) Chessmaster 8000 ? But Chess Base has as the first firm an own concept (look the version Fritz 4 and Analyses 1.0 as an engine (the program Bobby 1) or Hiarcs 4 ! In this time we have WinBoard yes and GnuChess and I think Crafty as an engine. I will say that Chess-Base was the first firm with an own concept. The first firm witch offers amateur engines for this concept, the first firm with an WinBoard adapter (good or not good) and and and ... I know a lot of people which found the way to chess with Chess-Base products and all this is good for computerchess. The next reason in my eyes ! We have a lot of very strong programs (Shredder, Zarkov, Fritz, Tiger and the others) but which person can beat the programs with 2600 ELO ! OK this seven programs on this new CD play with 2400 - 2500 ELO or stronger (SOS and Ikarus) and the most person can not see that amateur programs play 100 ELO weeker but important is the style from a program. 7 new programs for Chess-Base with 7 differnt styles and the full support and power in the newest version for these GUIs. I think that the new CD is fantastic and a great work from 7 programmers and Chess-Base ! My compliment ! This is for me one of the best messages in my News Ticker and I think that I have reach my finish ! Regards Frank I think that the programmers (Rudolf Huber, Christian Barreteau or the others) give in the next time the WinBoard engine for free for the fans from WinBoard !
