I am the one who reported results of the ChessGenius (PalmIIIe) vs. Sapphire II. Here are my results (Genius-Sapphire): 1 sec (unregistered) vs 2 sec (no book,no hash,no brain): 0-1 1 sec vs 2 sec (no hash, no brain): 0-2 1 sec vs 2 sec (no hash): 0-1 (Genius registered, both using book, Sapphire no permanent brain) 2 sec vs 2 sec: 2 - 2 5 sec vs 5 sec: 1.5 - 2.5 10 sec vs 10 sec: 1 - 3 Comments: Sapphire II is the stronger computer. The determining factors in my opinion: 1. Much larger book: Genius fell into lost positions in several games. 2. Selective play: Sapphire sees the holes in Genius's selective search, and is more active. 3. Hash tables: Sapphire has them (albeit small). This wasn't as big a factor as I originally thought: Genius has superb endgame heuristics. It even won one of the games out of a PPPPN vs PPR ending! Genius is comparatively stronger at the fast controls (1sec, 2sec) but Sapphire II gains the edge as the thinking times lengthen. This could be due to its hash tables or its more modern search (1996 vs 1984 for Roma). However, ChessGenius wins hands down for convenience (back-lit, touch screen, pocket size vs thick calculator). I still need assurance that it is safe to overclock my Palm IIIe before I do "advanced" testing. There are some horror stories in the newsgroups of people who trashed their Palm permanently after overclocking. Ian Osgood >Regards, > >Steve Maughan
