1) A DVD can 'handle' 2 layers, a lens can focus the beam on each one. This
multi-layers system exists since the begining of the DVD (2 layers possibles on
2 sides possibles)

2) A DVD-movie has often 2 faces written (one for 4:3 format and one for 16:9),
if you look at the file system i'll see 4+GB on each side the problem is that
you've to return de DVD manually ... (I've nerver seen double layers yet ...)
