If I remember correctly, until kernel 2.2 linux used to ask memory size to the bios that returned a 16bits integer so that it would not detect memory over 64Mb. The workaround was to give a kernel parameter mem=<size>. This should have been fixed in kernels 2.2 but I know some people are quite slow to upgrade their good stable linux kernel (especially if you have modules not yet supported in recent kernels). ujecrh
