I have an old Chess Encyclopedia with a 1980 copyright. It has a rather simple section on computer chess but it states that the first attempt was in the 50’s. It mentions a Claude E. Shannon as having the basics in 1949 and developing the program with, if I understand correctly, a brute force approach. Then he started testing selective search and there the book stops mentioning him. If you are wondering, no it does not mention the name, if any, of the program. Now, anyone knows anything about this Claude E. Shannon?
