You're asking questions that contain unsound assumptions. Like "why does the icca organise a tournament where two 'top' program entries founder on the $1000 issue , this doesn't make sense ? " No, it doesn't make sense if you assume their goals are the same as yours. Namely a tournament of all programs etc. etc. etc. I think their goals are other than these. And, looked at this way, without assuming that the icca is somehow 'for' computer chess - you can begin to analyse what their goals might be. I think the ability to provide all these programs and programmers into a tournament hall for one week has some sort of, ultimately, financial value. In other words, they are selling us to somebody, for something. There has to be some spin-off somewhere. Some benefit in another field, something. Just like TV companies 'sell' their audience to advertisers. You don't know you are being sold, you don't know that they own you. But they do. For this time you're watching the TV program or attending the tournament, they do. Something that means it doesn't matter if they upset a few programmers, because there are always more. Something that says it doesn't really matter which programs attend, just as long as they can provide the numbers. I've been going to these championships for a long time. And, what has always shocked me is, that if you're not one of some select clique; they treat you with a cavalier disregard that borders on rudeness. This, and other examples, is not the behaviour of an organising group that is interested in computer chess. For sure, from my own direct experience, they are interested in something else. Said it before, and will say it again: these icca organisers should resign; others can and would do their jobs. Chris Whittington
