I would strongly recommend you also upgrade your RAM, 128 MB would be optimal to
run Windows 9x and any other applications. As for the program, get the one which
suits your need.  It's a personal opinion, it's like buying a new car, different
people will have different saying about what's the best car.  I betcha you one
could never agree what is the best car ever designed outthere.  So the same
applies to chess engines, each has its own little weaknesses and strengths. I
would personally recommend Fritz, not because it's number 1 in the SSDF list,
it's because of its playing style, it's very agressive and very solid for a
chess engine.  It will always look for ways to open up a position, and create
tactical threats.  Because my style is totally opposite of Fritz, I find that I
can learn more from it.  True, someone will argue that Chess System Tal II or
MChess Pro is more agressive than Fritz, but, it's not very solid as Fritz is.
