Bob, please consider this:
I've been working on Chess Tiger for more than five years now. I spent
hours tuning, rewritting, testing my program in my free time. You know
exactly what it means, you've been doing the same for a long time.
Now, I begin to sell Tiger at low price, because it still doesn't have
database functions. Up to now, 1 copy has been sold, as far as I know.
The company in charge of commercial things is a very small one (just 1
person!). Do you really think we could afford a $1000 entrance fee? I
already have to pay the flight to Paris (I live in the caribbean). We
managed to find a sponsor for this, so ok, this problem is solved. I
still have to pay the hotel and some other things.
If I had to pay $1000, I just couldn't participate. Would you say it's
fair?
I think the emerging pro category is a good thing. Next year, Tiger
won't be "emerging" any more, and won't be able to pay $1000 to show its
jaws. Paris is going to be the first and last world championship for
Tiger.
I know that the "emerging pro" concept seems a little strange, but it is
not a bad idea.
